Joining HKBU in 2026 & Recruiting PhD Students for Fall 2026

I am joining HKBU's Department of Computer Science as an Assistant Professor in 2026 and am actively recruiting 1-2 PhD students for Fall 2026 in NLP, Knowledge Graphs, and AI Agents.

Joining HKBU as Assistant Professor & Recruiting PhD Students for Fall 2026!

I am thrilled to announce that I will be joining the Department of Computer Science at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) as an Assistant Professor, starting in 2026.

To build my future research group, I am now actively recruiting 1-2 highly motivated PhD students to join me in Fall 2026.

About Me (Supervisor Introduction)

I will be joining HKBU after completing my postdoctoral research at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), where I was supported by the prestigious RGC Junior Research Fellow Scheme . I received my Ph.D. from HKUST, funded by the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) . My research focuses on the complete lifecycle of knowledge in AI systems, and I have published extensively in top-tier AI and Data Mining conferences (such as ACL, EMNLP, NeurIPS, KDD). I also have industry research experience from my time as an Applied Scientist intern at Amazon Search. My goal is to conduct high-impact research that pushes the boundaries of AI. You can find more details on my biography page.

Research Directions

My group will focus on foundational and applied problems in AI. Admitted students can choose research topics based on their interests, including but not limited to:

  1. Knowledge Creation & Structuring: Developing automated methods to build and structure knowledge from raw data, capturing nuanced human intentions and dynamically generating schemas.
  2. Complex Knowledge Reasoning: Designing novel methods for logical, multi-hop, and privacy-preserving reasoning over large-scale knowledge graphs. A key focus will be on building the next generation of Agentic Neural Graph Databases.
  3. Knowledge-Enhanced AI Systems: Exploring the synergy between structured knowledge and Large Language Models (LLMs). This includes enhancing the factuality, robustness, and reasoning capabilities of LLMs in specialized domains.

Requirements for Applicants

I am looking for passionate and dedicated students. The ideal candidate will have:

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field.
  • Strong motivation for research, a proactive attitude, and a spirit of exploration.
  • Solid programming skills (Python is essential) and a good understanding of algorithms. Experience with deep learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch) is a plus.
  • A strong mathematical background (Linear Algebra, Probability, etc.).
  • Good English communication and writing skills (TOEFL ≥ 79 or IELTS ≥ 6.5).
  • Prior research experience, publications, or participation in programming/math competitions are highly valued but not mandatory.

How to Apply

Interested candidates should send an email to baijiaxin@hkbu.edu.hk. Please use the following format:

  • Email Subject: [PhD Application 2026] Your Name - Your University
  • Email Body: A brief self-introduction, including your research interests and motivation (around 200 words).
  • Attachments (in a single PDF file if possible):
    1. Full CV (including a list of publications, if any).
    2. Complete academic transcripts for all university-level studies.
    3. A brief statement of research interests.

I look forward to receiving your applications and building a world-class research team together!
